Sacred Heart to host class to help people with chronic conditions

St. Mary's Sacred Heart Hospital and Legacy Link Area Agency on Aging are teaming up to hold a six-week workshop designed to help people with chronic health conditions live full, active lives.

Living Well will be held on Wednesdays, Aug. 2 through Sept. 6, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the hospital, located at 367 Clear Creek Parkway, Lavonia. The class is free but enrollment is limited. Participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

"This class is for anyone facing challenges of living with ongoing health issues or who cares for someone who does," says Lisa Howard, Legacy Link Wellness Coordinator. "Our goal is to increase the participants' self-confidence in their ability to manage their health concerns on a daily basis so that they can enjoy life even with chronic health conditions."

Facilitated by two certified leaders, the six-session class will allow participants to learn ways to better manage conditions such as diabetes and its complications, obesity, heart failure, arthritis, the effects of stroke, and more.

"Many people in our area struggle with one or more chronic conditions," said Alex Lundy, Sacred Heart's Community Benefits and Outreach Manager. "Evidence shows that learning effective ways to manage those conditions can reduce hospital admissions, increase energy, and help people do more of the things they want to do."

Topics for the sessions will include:

  • Dealing with difficult emotions
  • Getting a good night sleep
  • Intro to physical activity and exercise
  • Medication management
  • Making informed treatment decisions
  • Communicating with family and healthcare team
  • Healthy eating and weight management
  • Pain and fatigue management
  • Dealing with depression and positive thinking
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • Setting achievable goals
  • Preventing falls and improving balance

"This is a small group class of 15-20 people at most," Howard notes. "By keeping it small, we create an environment where participants can share their experiences and learn through interacting with our facilitators and each other."

While there is no enrollment fee, participants must commit to attend at least four of the six sessions. For more information or to sign up, contact Lisa Howard at 770.538.2711 or
