3D Mammography

St. Mary’s is excited to announce the arrival of 3D Mammography. 3D mammography is the latest advancement in the battle against breast cancer. Using high powered computers to take multiple images, 3D mammography decreases superimposition of normal structures for better breast tissue visualization.

Studies have shown that 3D mammography reduces the call back rate by 37%, decreases the unnecessary biopsy rate by 11%, and increases the detection of invasive cancer by 53%. Simply put, it’s a better mammogram. 3D mammography is available at the hospital and the OP imaging Center located on Daniells Bridge Road.

Breast MRI

This exciting technology uses the power of magnetic resonance imaging to create highly detailed 3-D images of the breast. Breast MRI is an excellent follow-up tool when another test finds something suspicious, and can be used as a screening tool in certain women who are at high risk for breast cancer.

MRI-guided breast biopsy

When it is important to obtain a sample to check for cancer, St. Mary’s MRI-guided breast biopsy system provides state-of-the-art accuracy with minimal discomfort. St. Mary’s powerful MRI scanner provides real-time images to help physicians locate and remove tissue for complete analysis by St. Mary’s pathologists. St. Mary’s was the first hospital in Northeast Georgia and one of the first in the state to offer MRI-guided breast biopsy.

Breast health nurse

St. Mary’s provides a specially trained nurse to assist you when you need follow-up diagnostic studies or when breast cancer is diagnosed. St. Mary’s breast health nurse is available to help you understand your diagnosis and options, provide comfort and assurance, and help you navigate the health care system. This expert also is available to assist with breast cancer education and community programs.

Our pledge

We know how much anxiety you feel if there is something suspicious on your mammogram. So, if we find a suspicious spot on your test, it is our goal to call you in for further testing within 48 hours and to complete follow-up testing in one visit, with results within 24 hours, sometimes even while you wait. The diagnostic process is not always simple or easy, so we cannot guarantee specific turn-around times, but we will do everything in our power to get you the answers you need – fast. We are committed to helping you feel better.

Surgical facilities

St. Mary’s includes fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgical facilities for the surgical removal of cancerous tissues, breast reconstruction and more. Your surgeon will perform your surgery, assisted by St. Mary’s team of compassionate, highly trained anesthesiologists, surgical nurses, nurse anesthetists, and more. Your initial post-anesthesia recovery will take place in the surgical suites under the care of specially trained nurses. Many biopsy and even surgical patients can go home the same day; others can be admitted to a comfortable inpatient room for continuing care.

High speed CT and more

St. Mary’s features the region’s first 64-slice CT scanner, the first type of CT scanner in the world fast enough to capture 3-D images of the heart between beats. St. Mary’s Toshiba Aquilion 64 provides such high resolution images that doctors can see dangerous plaque build-ups on the inside of coronary arteries. Our Radiology Center also features ultrasound studies, stereotactic breast biopsy, ultrasound-guided biopsy, bone density scanning at The Exchange, nuclear medicine, digital x-ray and more.

Bone Densitometry

When you need an accurate study of bone density, St. Mary’s Radiology Center can help. Our sophisticated bone density scanner painlessly studies the structure of your bones while you rest. Bone densitometry is used to diagnose osteoporosis, a potentially debilitating condition in which bones become weak and brittle. St. Mary’s Radiology Center is conveniently located at 2470 Daniells Bridge Road. Call (706) 389-2300 for more information. The center also offers mammography services.
